Naturally shy, independent creatures, snow leopards are one of the most elegant and noble animals existing today. Traditionally inhabiting the rugged mountain ranges of Central Asia, snow leopards have been negatively impacted by the effects of global warming. As the snow lines recede higher up in to the mountains, snow leopards must also move their homes upwards. However, fewer animals inhabit these higher elevation areas, and snow leopards find less and less food sources. Desired for their fur and animal parts, which are used in traditional Asian medicines, snow leopards are illegally hunted. As human communities encroach onto their natural habitat and reducing the natural prey available, snow leopards become in increasing conflict with humans when they attack livestock because of scarcity of their natural prey. Snow leopards are suspected of having declined by more than 20% over the last 16 years, with only 3,500- 7,000 estimated to be living in the wild today.
