The Southern White Faced Owl, also known as the “Laughing Owl” was given its name because of its call, which sounded like someone laughing. The laughing owl could once be found throughout New Zealand but is now extinct. Nobody really knows for sure why the Laughing Owl became extinct. There is evidence that these owls were eaten by humans and they also may have been prey of more recently introduced species. Sightings of the Laughing Owl became minimal after the 1880’s and it was declared extinct in 1914.
