Shy, independent creatures, snow leopards are being negatively impacted by global warming. As the snow lines recede higher up in the mountains they inhabit, snow leopards move their homes up even though less food is available at these elevations.  Desired for their beautiful coat and animal parts used in traditional Asian medicines, snow leopards are illegally hunted.  Snow leopards have declined by more than 20% over the last 16 years, with only 3,500- 7,000 estimated to be living in the wild today.

Giant Pandas capture the hearts and imaginations of people around the world- but these playful creatures are dwindling in numbers. The most serious threat to their survival is loss of habitat and renewable food resources. Pandas need between 20-45 pounds of bamboo a day and must often travel to support their food needs, but much of their natural habitat has been destroyed by farming, development and forest clearing. Today, only about 1,600 pandas remain in the wild and just 200 in captivity.

Once found in North America, the Red Wolf is the most rare and endangered of the wolf species. Hunted to the brink of extinction, fewer than 20 pure red wolves were captured in 1980 to breed in captivity. Now about 100 live in the wild and about 207 live in captivity. Threats to their survival include human encroachment, severe weather, deaths by motor vehicles, and illegal killings.

The largest member of the cat family, most tigers have more than 100 strips, which, like fingerprints, are unique to each tiger.  In the early 1900s about 100,000 tigers lived in the wild, but only 3,000- 4,500 tigers exist today – a reduction of more than 95% – and they face total extinction by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger. This endangered species is killed for their pelts and animal parts used in traditional Asian medicines and because they are seen as a threat to ever encroaching human communities.

Today, only about 1,000 individuals of the endangered slender-horned gazelle survive.  Uncontrolled hunting for their horns sold as ornaments, habitat loss and warfare are the primary causes of their decline.  Slender-horned gazelles have large ears and a good sense of hearing and vision for detecting danger.  They generally live in groups of about 10 individuals, although groups as large as 30 individuals have been observed.

A living link to the Ice Age and a rare but important North American bird, the population of the California condor dwindled to only 22 by 1987, the same year they were taken into captivity for breeding. The condor has a current population of only about 349. Increased use of poisonous pesticides, poaching, fewer food sources and accidental ingestion of man-made materials like bottle caps, wire and leaded bullets decimated this species.

Grevy Zebra – I Look Better in the Wild

Women’s
$73.00 pre-order sales price $54.75
#24002ZB
Sizes S, M, L, XL
Available September 2010
Each zebra has a unique set of stripes, like fingerprints are to humans.  Despite this commonality, humans have drastically depleted the Grevy zebra’s population through encroachment on their grazing habitat, reduction of their water supply by farm irrigation and drought,  and illegal hunting for their beautiful skin.  A few decades ago, more than 15,000 Grevy zebra inhabited Africa; today, fewer than 2,500 remain.

African Elephant – Exploited

Men’s
$76.00 pre-order sales price $57.00
#14003EL
Sizes S, M, L, XL
Available September 2010
African elephants, the largest land animals on earth, are caring creatures who use more than 25 different vocal sounds to communicate with each other.   Their numbers are dwindling because of habitat loss and because they are greedily exploited for their  tusks – used for jewelry and piano keys – and as prized trophies of big game hunters. Between 1979 and 1989, their population dropped in half, from 1.2 million to 600,000. Today, only about 470,000 to 700,000 of these endangered animals remain.
