Shy, independent creatures, snow leopards are being negatively impacted by global warming. As snow lines recede higher up the mountains, snow leopards move their homes even though less food is available at these elevations. Desired for their beautiful coats and animal parts, used in traditional Asian medicine, the species is illegally hunted. Snow leopards have declined in population by more than 20% over the last 16 years, with only 3,500- 7,000 estimated to be living in the wild today.
