Giant pandas capture the hearts and imaginations of people around the world- but these playful creatures are dwindling in numbers. The most serious threat to their survival is the loss of habitat and renewable food resources. Pandas need between 20-45 pounds of bamboo a day and must often travel to support their food needs, but much of their natural habitat has been destroyed by farming, development and forest clearing. Today, only about 1,600 pandas remain in the wild and just 200 in captivity.
